VAN WERT COUNTY, OHIO
*Van Wert County, Ohio, is situated in the west toward
the north part of the state, and contains 432 square miles. The surface is level; soil, varies
from rich bottom to a light sandy loam, and is productive. It is mostly covered with a dense
forest. Drained by St. Mary's and Little Auglaize rivers. The Miami canal passes near its east
border, without entering it. Capital, Van Wert. There were in 1840, neat cattle 1,724, sheep
335, swine 3,800; wheat 3,090 bushels produced, Indian corn 33,306, oats 3,267, potatoes 5,671,
sugar 3,070 pounds; 4 stores, capital $4,100; 2 grist mills, 2 saw mills. Capital in
manufactures $2,100. Population: 1,577.
